Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Canada 2026: Eligibility, New Requirements, Restoration and Application Guide

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Canada 2026: Eligibility, New Requirements, Restoration and Application Guide

Published: October 24, 2026 | Bright Edge Immigration Services Inc.

Completing your studies in Canada is a major achievement, but obtaining your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an equally important step toward building your professional future in Canada.

A PGWP allows eligible international graduates to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies. This experience may also help graduates qualify for Canadian permanent residence through immigration programs such as Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs.

However, with changes to PGWP eligibility, language requirements, and field of study restrictions, students must carefully review their eligibility before submitting an application.

At Bright Edge Immigration Services Inc., we have successfully helped thousands of international students obtain their work permits. Whether you are applying for your first PGWP, facing an immigration status issue, or currently within the restoration period, our experienced team is here to provide professional guidance.

1. Who Is Eligible for a PGWP in Canada in 2026?

To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, international students must generally meet the following requirements:

  • Graduate from a PGWP-eligible program at an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Complete a program lasting at least eight months, or meet the applicable requirements for certain Quebec programs.
  • Maintain full-time student status during their studies, except for permitted circumstances such as the final academic semester.
  • Apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation of program completion.
  • Meet the applicable language proficiency requirements.
  • Meet the field of study requirements, if applicable.
  • Satisfy all other immigration and program-specific eligibility conditions.

Important: Not every program offered by a Designated Learning Institution qualifies for a PGWP. Students should verify the eligibility of their specific institution and program.

2. PGWP Language Requirements in 2026

Under the requirements introduced on November 1, 2024, most PGWP applicants must provide proof of their English or French language proficiency.

The minimum language requirements depend on the type of educational program completed.

University Graduates

Students graduating from bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, or other eligible university programs generally require:

  • CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French.
  • The required level in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

College and Other Non-University Graduates

Students graduating from eligible college diploma, certificate, or other non-university programs generally require:

  • CLB 5 in English or NCLC 5 in French.
  • The required level in all four language abilities.

Accepted English tests include IELTS General Training, CELPIP General, and PTE Core. IRCC also accepts designated French language tests.

Certain exemptions apply, including for graduates of eligible flight schools.

Students should ensure their test results meet the requirements before submitting their PGWP application.

3. Field of Study Requirements for PGWP in 2026

Another important consideration is whether your educational program falls under an eligible field of study.

Students who submitted their study permit applications on or after November 1, 2024, may need to complete a program in an eligible field of study.

However, graduates with bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees are exempt from this requirement. Other exemptions may also apply.

Eligible programs are identified using Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes.

IRCC has confirmed that the list of eligible fields of study will remain frozen for 2026, with no additions or removals during the year.

Before applying, students should verify their program’s CIP code and determine whether the field of study requirement applies to them.

4. How Long Is a PGWP Valid?

The validity of a Post-Graduation Work Permit depends on factors such as the duration and type of program completed and the applicant’s passport validity.

Generally:

  • Eligible programs lasting at least eight months but less than two years may result in a PGWP valid for up to the length of the program.
  • Eligible programs lasting two years or longer may qualify for a PGWP valid for up to three years.
  • Graduates of eligible master’s degree programs lasting at least eight months may qualify for a three-year PGWP, even when the program is shorter than two years.

Additional rules apply to certain programs, including combined programs and programs completed under specific educational arrangements.

Important: A PGWP may be issued for a shorter duration if the applicant’s passport expires earlier.

5. Can You Apply for a PGWP During the Restoration Period?

Yes. In certain circumstances, eligible international graduates may apply for a PGWP while seeking restoration of their student status.

This is one of the most important issues for students whose study permits have already expired.

If your study permit has expired, you may still have options depending on your circumstances, including:

  • When your study permit expired.
  • Whether you are within the permitted restoration period.
  • When you completed your studies.
  • Whether you meet the PGWP eligibility requirements.
  • Whether you have maintained valid immigration status or need restoration.

Generally, restoration applications must be submitted within 90 days of losing temporary resident status, provided the applicant meets the applicable conditions.

For eligible PGWP applicants, IRCC permits an application to restore student status and apply for a PGWP.

However, restoration is not automatic, and applicants must satisfy the relevant immigration requirements.

Can You Work While Your Restoration and PGWP Applications Are Processing?

Applicants seeking restoration generally cannot work while awaiting approval of their PGWP.

Submitting a PGWP application does not automatically authorize employment. Work authorization depends on the applicant’s immigration status and whether the specific IRCC requirements are satisfied.

At Bright Edge Immigration Services Inc., we assist students who are within the restoration period and need professional guidance regarding their immigration options.

If your study permit has expired, do not assume that you have lost every opportunity to apply. A timely assessment of your circumstances can help determine the available options.

6. Can You Apply for a PGWP After Your Study Permit Expires?

In certain situations, yes.

IRCC generally allows eligible graduates to apply for a PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation that they completed their studies.

However, the 180-day PGWP application deadline and the 90-day restoration period are different requirements.

Students must also consider whether their study permit was valid during the required period following program completion.

If your study permit has already expired, your options may depend on whether you can restore your status or whether applying from outside Canada is appropriate.

Because these situations involve strict deadlines and immigration status considerations, professional guidance can be particularly valuable.

7. Documents Required for a PGWP Application

The documents required for a PGWP application depend on the applicant’s individual circumstances.

Common supporting documents include:

  1. Valid passport.
  2. Current or previous study permit.
  3. Official program completion letter.
  4. Final academic transcripts.
  5. Approved English or French language test results.
  6. Evidence of an eligible field of study.
  7. Restoration documentation, if applicable.
  8. Medical examination documentation, where required.
  9. Any other supporting document.

Students should ensure that their documents are accurate, complete, and consistent with their immigration history.

8. Common Mistakes Students Make When Applying for a PGWP

Even a seemingly straightforward PGWP application can become complicated when important requirements are overlooked.

Some common mistakes include:

Applying After the Deadline

Students must respect the 180-day application deadline. Waiting too long after graduation can affect eligibility.

Ignoring Immigration Status

A student whose study permit has expired may need restoration or another appropriate immigration strategy.

Submitting Incorrect Language Test Results

Applicants must meet the language requirements applicable to their program and provide accepted test results.

Not Checking Program Eligibility

Graduating from a Canadian institution does not necessarily mean the program qualifies for a PGWP.

Failing to Explain Academic Irregularities

Unexplained part-time semesters, unauthorized breaks, or inconsistencies in academic records may raise eligibility concerns.

Working Without Authorization

Students must understand when their authorization to work ends and whether they qualify to work while their PGWP application is processing.

Careful preparation and a review of the applicant’s complete immigration history can help identify potential issues before submission.
